Fine line constellation on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A small constellation design of linked dots and star shapes sits on the inner upper arm, with a planet drawn in purple and blue at its centre. The fine black linework is delicate and even, with a few star points filled in yellow, pink and blue for colour. The tattoo is shown centred against soft, pale skin and a blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada Crane had kept the light on Skerrow Holm for nineteen winters, and her son Ewan had never once been allowed to touch the lens. He sat on the stone step of the lamp room with his slate, copying the sky she had taught him to name. "That's the Weaver's Comb," she said, pointing with her pipe. "That's the Hunter's Shoulder, and the purple one that never blinks is the Wanderer. It has never once been where the charts say it is."

The fog came in on a Tuesday in October with the Fenwick boat still out past the Mare's Teeth. The lamp burned, but the glass had sweated, and the beam smeared into grey porridge that no skipper could steer by. Ada sent Ewan up with a candle lantern and his slate. "Join them up," she said. "Not the way the book does. Join them the way you'd join a line of salt across a step."

He drew the dots onto the cold glass with one finger, a little chain of gold points, a rose-coloured one low down where the rocks were, and the Wanderer hanging in the middle like a bead on thread. Out in the murk, Donal Fenwick saw a smear of blue where the planet should be, then a yellow spark, then the pink one. He understood that the sky was telling him where the rock was not.

They brought the boat in at first light with all four hands alive. The lens was never properly mended, so every autumn after, Ewan drew the stars on the window before the fog arrived, and the fishing boats found their way home by the same crooked line.
