Constellation tattoo on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A person's upper arm shows a constellation design made of fine black dots joined by thin dotted lines, with several larger star marks. The linework is delicate and evenly spaced, with no shading. The design is entirely black on pale skin, set against the green fabric of a short sleeve at the top of the frame.

Mrs Ada Vosper kept the boarding house at the top of Gull Steps, and every October she set her lodgers a game: find the seven stars on the water-stained ceiling of the back parlour before the kettle boiled. Most lost. The kettle always won, and the losers paid for the tea in threepenny bits pushed across the oilcloth.

The new lodger, a rigger called Tom Hesketh, came in March with his late father's sea chart rolled under one arm. He spread it on the parlour table and weighted the corners with salt cellars. Ada saw the stars he had marked in pencil, small dots joined by thin dotted lines, and her throat tightened, because they were the same stars her brother used to tap onto her palm on the ferry crossing, the year they were both too small to be trusted with a lamp.

He sailed on the ebb in April for a Norwegian trawler, leaving the chart pinned to her wall with a note in square capitals: JOIN THE REST WHEN I'M BACK. She did not know what the rest meant. Each night she took a bradawl and pressed one tiny hole into the plaster along the penciled lines, working by candle so she could see where the next dot belonged.

By May the ceiling held a constellation no almanac had ever printed. On the first clear night of June she climbed onto a chair, held the candle up, and found the last unmarked star in the corner nearest the window, bright as a pinhead, exactly where a rigger's careful hand would have put it.
