Delicate botanical sprig on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two slender stems branching upwards, with small pointed leaves and tiny flower buds, some tinted pale pink. The linework is very fine and mostly black, with light shading on the leaves and stems. The design sits diagonally on the outer forearm against a plain light background, with a white top and dark denim at the left of the frame.

Mind the gate, it sticks in wet weather, and keep the dog out of the back field where the bramble has crept over the wall. Ruth said it from halfway down the path, secateurs in one hand and a jam jar in the other, because the removal men were due at ten and there was no time left to be sentimental about a hedge.

The sprig grew where the old wall met the lane, low and stubborn, its stems branching up like the forks of a handwritten letter. In June the buds opened into pale pink heads so small you had to bend close to see them, and her mother had called them lucky without ever saying why. Ruth cut two stems, careful to take the leaves with them, and wrapped the cut ends in a damp handkerchief. She had already pressed a hundred things between the pages of the county atlas, but she had never pressed anything she was leaving behind.
The new owner's boy came round the side of the house while she was loading the car. He was about nine, with a cricket ball in one fist, and he wanted to know what the plant was called. Ruth told him the name in Latin, which he did not care about, and then the name her mother had used, which he liked better. He said they should cut it back before it took over. She said nothing, because he was right, and because it would not be her job any more.
At the kitchen table of the new flat that evening, she opened the atlas to the page for the valley she had just left. She laid the stems across the blue thread of the river, leaves facing north, buds tipped towards the sea. The paper took them without a sound. She closed the book, pressed it flat with both palms, and sat there in the unfamiliar quiet until the streetlight came on outside the window.
