Fine line geometric zigzag on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white close-up of a wrist showing a fine line tattoo of angular zigzags and open triangles running vertically across the skin. The thin, even linework is partly obscured by a silver cuff with a jagged, tooth-like edge that wraps around the wrist. The shallow depth of field keeps the cuff sharp while the tattoo softens towards the edges of the frame.

You climb the spiral stair at Scarrow Head with a tin of oil in one hand and a silver cuff in the other. The cuff is your mother's, the one with teeth along its edge that she wore to the Sunday dances before the war. You haven't pawned anything. You took it from the drawer while she slept, meaning to work the jagged edge into the seized gears, since it bites grit out of brass better than any file in the shed.

At the top, the glass throws the grey afternoon back in a hundred pieces. The mechanism has locked on the fourth bearing. You kneel on cold iron and draw the cuff's teeth along the channel the way your father showed you, zig and back, zig and back, until the pencil marks he scratched on the inside of the housing show through the dust. He kept count of the boats in those lines, open triangles drawn one for each vessel not yet home. You have never asked him whose they were.
The shaft shudders and turns. Light swings out over the water, slow and white, and far off past the Skerries a trawler's horn answers it. You stay kneeling, the metal cool against the pulse in your wrist, and you count. Three triangles stand open at the bottom of the frame where the lines run out. You fasten the cuff back on, and you wait for the boats.
