Sit closer, you lot, the lamp has only one good wick left in it. The Varley Brothers Travelling Show was dying the way old horses do, slowly and then all at once, and the last thing it had worth a ticket was the trapeze. Two of them worked it: Ambrose on the bar and his sister Nell on the catch, though folk in Hexham swore she had never once caught a thing she wasn't meant to.

The trick was simple enough on paper. Ambrose let go at the top of the swing, flew out into the cold with nothing but his nerve, and Nell reached for him from the far platform. Their hands had to meet in the dark, a finger's width apart, before the wind took the gap. Every night for eleven seasons the crowd held its breath at that gap. Some nights it closed. Most nights it didn't, the net caught them both, and the band struck up regardless.

Then came the wet October when the big top split along its seam and the owner sold the horses to a glue works in Carlisle. Ambrose said he would go on alone. Nell only said, go on, then, and climbed the ladder. What passed between them up there is not for a crowd to gawp at, so I'll tell you only this: when he reached out that last night, she was already reaching back, and the lamps went out before anyone could say whose fingers had moved first.

In the morning the net lay folded on the wet grass. Beside it, in the mud, were two sets of boot prints, a yard apart, both heading down the lane towards the road.
