Fine line bracelet tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a wrist and part of the hand, with a fine line tattoo across the inner wrist that imitates a layered bracelet. Two thin wavy lines, one of them dotted, run around the wrist, with a small outlined diamond-shaped charm at the centre. The linework is delicate and even, the image is in black and white, and the wrist fills the frame against a dark textured sleeve.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit nearer the stove, you're letting the draught in, and I won't tell it twice. Ada Penhale ground the lenses for the Mumbles light and she never once let a wave touch her hands, because her father had drowned off the Helwick and she believed the sea kept accounts. So when the new keeper, a thin man called Tobias Rook, came up the cliff path with a coil of silver wire and asked for a bracelet that wouldn't snag on rope, she told him to come back on Thursday, which meant she would not make it.

He came back on Thursday and on the Thursday after. On the third visit she gave in and drew the wire out so fine it looked like breath on cold glass. Then she laid a second strand beside it and pricked it with a needle so it ran in dots, like rain stopped halfway down a window. Where the two met she set a little diamond cut from a broken lens, no bigger than a fingernail moon, because she had a drawer full of such pieces and no use for them. Rook asked what it was for. She said that was his business, and the sea would ask him the same question soon enough.

That winter a fog came in so thick the Thornwick ferry lost its lights for two nights. Rook walked the cliff path with a hand lamp and the bracelet on his wrist, and when the beam swept across the diamond it threw a small clean light onto the rocks ahead of him, enough to show him the next step and the one after that. Ada heard the ferry horn from her kitchen window and counted the gaps between its calls the way her father taught her, and she did not sleep. When Rook finally knocked at dawn she asked him nothing. She tightened the clasp by one turn, the way her father always did, and said a thing made to catch the light was no good to anyone if it stayed in a drawer.
