Fine line lotus and swirl design sketch

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of several vertical designs, each made of looping swirls and scrolls with a small lotus-style flower at the lower left of each strand and a trail of dots beneath. The linework is thin and even, in black ink on white paper, with no shading or colour. The strands are arranged diagonally across the sheet, with a dark surface visible at the top left corner.

Hold the lantern lower, love, the steps are wet and that's the bit everyone skips. Right. You want the Caddow Light, and you'll get it the way my grandmother gave it to me, with the wind going round the gallery like it's looking for a way in.

Old Amos Tallow kept that light for thirty-one years, and he never once trusted the sea to behave. He had a notebook of currents, drawn in ink so fine you needed a glass to read it, and every eddy off the Tallow Rocks had its own curl on the page. He said the water ran in scrolls there, round and back on itself, and the foam that lifted at the base of the rocks opened like a flower and shut again. Ships that followed that foam didn't come out the other side.

The winter his eyesight went, it was his daughter Nell who climbed the stair each night and read the notebook to him by candle. She marked a line of dots on the chart where the safe water ran, one dot for every bell the buoys rang in a single tide, and she swore she could hear them ringing in her sleep.

The night the fog came down thick as wool, a collier was out past the rocks with no light to steer by. Nell did not wait for her father's permission. She carried the oil up in buckets, lit every lamp in the tower and set the great glass turning faster, so the light threw a trail of bright dots across the water. The collier followed them in. Amos, listening from his bed, said it was the first time in thirty-one years the sea had done as it was told.
