I have drawn the heart you asked for. Five daisies, because Mrs Pratt says four is unlucky and five is only greedy, and stems that run together where the petals stop, the way your mother's washing line used to sag between the two pegs behind the chapel.

I tried it first in biro on the back of the rota, then again on good paper, and both times the top left flower came out lopsided, like it had been caught by a draught halfway through opening. I left it that way. Nothing in the Harrow Lane allotments grows straight anyway, and the leaves are the only bit I am proud of, little teardrops hanging off the stalks as if they had been waiting all summer to be asked.

The dance on Saturday is in the Co-op hall, not the Legion, because the Legion's floor has a dip near the piano that Doreen swears has swallowed two ladies' shoes. Come at eight. Wear the blue. If you would rather I did not come at all, you need only leave the heart on the bench by the bus stop, and I will read it there with my cap in my hands and know everything I need to know.
