Rose and swirling vine design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows three open roses and two rosebuds with leaves, linked by thick, tapering swirled stems that curl across a tall, narrow layout. The roses use fine, even outlines with inner petal detail, while the vines are heavier black strokes with a smooth, calligraphic finish. The design is rendered in black ink on plain white paper, with open space on the right side.

The third rose kept sagging before the buttercream had a chance to set, and Gran was already tapping her watch against the steel worktop. I wiped the nozzle on my apron and started again from the centre, the way she had shown me twice. The middle petal should be tight, almost a fist, and every outer petal lifted a little looser than the one before it. The oven at the back of the Hollins Street bakery ticked as it cooled from the first batch of loaves, and the flour dust hung in the light from the single bulb above the bench.

She had no patience for hurry. Vines, she said, were the easy part, as long as I remembered they were heavier at the root and thinned as they climbed, like a sentence trailing off into a question. I piped the stems in long, unbroken sweeps around the tall tier, curling each tip into a tight spiral and finishing it with a flick of the wrist. The cake was for a wedding at eleven, and the couple had asked for roses up one side only, with the other left bare. Gran had insisted on the bare side. Leave room for them to breathe, she said, and would not say who she meant.
By the time I had finished the last rosebud, the window over the sink had gone from black to the colour of weak tea. A van reversed somewhere out on the street, and a delivery boy whistled under the shutter. Gran leaned over my shoulder, looked for a long moment at the swirls and the open roses, and said nothing, which from her was the highest praise she ever gave. She passed me the palette knife, and I spent the next ten minutes smoothing the blank side of the cake until it was perfectly flat.
