Fine line lotus on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline lotus flower with pointed petals sits on the inner wrist, with a short row of dots above it and a pair of dots below. The linework is thin and even, and the design is filled with no shading. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin against a patterned fabric and dark background.

The quarry pond had been dead for eleven summers when Ilse Harrow waded in with a sack of pods tied at her waist. Nobody in Thornbeck believed lotus would take in standing water that smelt of diesel, but her grandfather had carried the seeds home from a port in Goa sewn into his coat lining, and she was not going to let them rot in a biscuit tin.

She planted three rows along the silted edge, pressing each pod into the mud with her thumb, and counted aloud the way he had taught her: one for the ferry bell, one for the rain, one for whatever came after. The village watched from the lane. Mr Pell from the chapel said the ground was too sour. Her sister said it was a waste of a good Saturday.
Weeks passed with nothing but green stalks clenched like fists above the water. Then one morning in late July a single leaf lay flat on the surface, and beside it a bud as tight as a closed purse. Ilse sat on the wall with her boots off and waited, and it opened slowly, petal after petal, until the whole flower faced the sun and looked, she thought, rather pleased with itself.
Her grandfather's ledger had a line in pencil: plant what the water forgets. She wrote beneath it that the water had remembered after all, then went home, found the tin with the last six seeds, and tied them in a handkerchief for the next pond.
