Lotus and unalome on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A fine black linework lotus flower sits above a vertical line that ends in a looped swirl and a row of dots. The image is a close view of the upper back, with the subject's hair falling over the shoulders and the face not shown. The ink is a single dark tone on a light skin background, with even, clean lines and plenty of space around the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the lower road by noon, and Mrs Agnes Fell came down the stairs at Harrowgate Inn with a candle in one hand and a ledger under the other arm. I was the only one still up. She set the ledger on the bar and opened it to a page I had never seen: fine pencilled lines, a single stem drawn straight up the margin, and a flower at the top like a closed fist.

"Every guest who stays in the blue room sketches a line," she said. "Then they leave by the morning coach, and the line goes on without them."

I laughed, because the wind was rattling the shutters and I had been drinking her sloe gin since supper. But she turned the pages back for me, and each entry had a little curl at the foot, a knot like a sleeping cat's tail, with a column of dots running above it like stars that had lost their way. A surveyor. A widow from Kendal. A boy who drew nothing at all and only left a cup of cold tea.

On the final sheet the line was unfinished. The flower was there, its petals opening the way the morning opens over the fells, but the knot at the bottom was blank. Agnes tapped it with one finger. "Yours, if you stay the night," she said. "Or you can take the coach."

I took the coach. I have carried that ledger in my head ever since: the stem climbing, the dots above it, the knot I never drew, and the snow closing over the road behind me like a page turning.
