The tin bath behind the Sandrock Fuel Stop has finally done it. I told you in March I'd put the lotus seeds in, the ones Mr Okafor pressed on me when his lorry broke down outside Tibooburra, and you laughed and said nothing grows out here but tyre marks. Well, there's a bloom. Five petals, pale at the tips and clean at the edges, with nothing inside them but the light coming off the road.
Every morning I drive out past the dead windmill to check the water line, and every morning the dust has got into the tub a bit more. Cassie, who runs the till, says I've been talking to it. I have. It's easier than talking to the lorry drivers, who only want to know if the diesel is cold.
Last Tuesday a woman in a hire car pulled in with a dog and a map she'd folded wrong. She stood by the tub a long time without buying anything. Then she asked whether it needed rain or just somebody to look at it. I said both, probably. She nodded as if that was the right answer and drove off west, and I stood there with the hose in my hand, feeling foolish and a little less alone.
I've left the last three seeds in a matchbox on the counter, labelled in biro. If you're ever out this way, take one and plant it where you can see it from the road.
