Fine line poppy on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single poppy bloom is drawn in delicate black linework, with its petals open and a dotted centre visible. A thin, unbroken stem runs downward from the flower to the lower edge of the frame. The ink is grey-black on pale skin, with soft natural light and a plain dark background.

I was nine and thought she had lost her marbles. She knotted a length of fishing line to the balcony rail, tied the other end to the poppy's stem, and let the flower hang out over the drop, past the bins and the cracked car park, so it swung like a bell in the wind. "Somebody down there needs to see it," she said, and when I asked who, she just shrugged and put the kettle on.
She died in February. When I came back to clear the flat the poppy was still on the rail, gone to seed, its stem brown and brittle, the line rusted into the metal. Seed had blown into the crack of the balcony tiles and something green was pushing through. I stood there longer than I meant to. Down by the bins a boy in a school blazer stopped, looked up at the thin dark line running from our balcony to the ground, and then carried on across the car park with his hands in his pockets.
