Fine line rose and foliage on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-needle style botanical design shows a five-petalled wild rose with a stamen centre, surrounded by pinnate leaves, serrated leaves, slender fern-like sprigs, a small bud and a cluster of berries. The work uses thin, even black outlines with light stippling in the flower centre and no shading or fill. The arrangement is a loose bouquet centred on the forearm against a plain, pale skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Pargeter had kept the hedge behind the old Coldharbour schoolhouse for forty years, though nobody had ever asked her to. When the class of 1979 came back for their reunion, the wild rose had climbed over the wall and into the playground, and its hips hung red as boiled sweets above the gravel.

Dennis Okafor, who had once been sent out for picking the petals, stood at the gate with a paper cup of cider and asked her why she never cut it back. Nell said a rose wants its own way for one summer, and after that it gives back what it was given. The old people in the village had always said the bush remembered who had sat beneath it, and that it would find a lost child's way home if the child kept still.

They read the register in the hall that evening, the way the teacher used to, Mr Halliday long dead and the chalk gone from the board. Name after name went unanswered, and each time someone said a name aloud the room went quiet. When it was done, Nell walked out to the wall, broke a sprig of fern-thin leaves from the bush, and laid it on the empty chair by the window. In the morning a single bloom had opened on the seat, five pale petals around a centre of gold dust, and nobody could say who had put it there.
