Fine line black script reading we're all mad here on a forearm, with green palm fronds behind the arm.

Fine line script quote on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm carries the words "we're all mad here" in thin black cursive script, running diagonally across the skin. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the lettering is sharp against the pale skin. Green palm fronds fill the background, and the soft natural light gives the image a calm, outdoor feel.

The bookbinder in Rye had been told by three separate doctors that her hands would stop working by Michaelmas, so she spent the summer teaching the postman to sew. He was hopeless. His stitches wandered across the spine like drunk ants, and he kept asking whether the thread knew where it was going.

"Thread never knows," said Mrs Okonedo, who had kept the shop since the war. "It only follows the needle and hopes."

On the first wet Thursday of August a woman came in with a manuscript wrapped in brown paper and a cat's collar buckled round the parcel. She wanted it bound in green cloth, with no title, and she would not say whose handwriting filled the pages. When Mrs Okonedo opened it she found sentences that doubled back on themselves, a chapter about a queen who played croquet with flamingos, and a line pencilled small in the margin: we're all mad here.

The bookbinder laughed until she had to sit down. "Everybody says that," she said, "right before they ask for a discount."

The woman did not smile. She paid in farthings, which had not been legal tender for years, and walked out into the rain without an umbrella. The postman asked whether he should follow her. Mrs Okonedo handed him the needle. "Sew the signatures," she said. "The rest of it will find its own way home."
