Fine line script tattoo reading 'we're all mad here' on the inner forearm, with a hand reaching through green palm leaves.

'We're all mad here' script on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A slim forearm carries a small line of cursive script in black ink, reading 'we're all mad here'. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering set in a loose, handwritten style. The arm is shown against blurred green palm fronds in natural daylight, with the hand reaching in from the left and the text placed centrally along the forearm.

Dear Nell,

The lamp man came round again this morning asking after Dad's shift book. I told him what I tell everyone, that the book is in the drawer where it has always been and he is welcome to read it standing up. He didn't laugh. Mr Pryce from the chapel took the hint and went off with his hat in his hands, and the whole row of them stood in the road like geese after the bread has gone. You'd have enjoyed that.

Nothing's settled at the Bell pit. The owners are to meet the men on Thursday in Barnsley, but they said that last month too. Mam has stopped reading the papers aloud because every time she reaches a figure her voice goes thin, so I read them myself in the privy where nobody can see my face.

Little Tom has taken to chalking the names of the dead on the back wall of the wash-house. When I asked why, he said somebody had to keep count now that the newspapers had given up. I said the Lord keeps count. He said the Lord had been down the pit with a bad chest and would be no use to anybody till Sunday. I gave him a biscuit and told him to make the letters neat.

At the chapel tea, Mr Pryce held up his cup and said we're all mad here, which Dad always used to say when the coal dust got into the bread. Nobody laughed that time either, but Tom stood up on the bench and cheered, and I think that was the most sensible thing said all week. Write soon and tell me Lancashire is kinder.

Your loving sister, Annie
