Rain had swollen the Mercer Cut for three days when Ada Penhale first noticed the bargeman reading the lock boards out of order. He came up from the lower gate with his lips moving, and stopped at the upper one, where the paint was still tacky. Her brother Tom had lettered the words there in white on black, the way their father once lettered the milestones, and Ada had let him, because Tom was better with a brush and worse with patience.

The board on the lower gate carried the second half. Between the two gates the water rose and fell, and the boats came through in ones and twos, the steerers cursing the sluices and children waving from the towpath. Hardly anyone read both boards, since you had to walk the whole length of the cut to do it, and few people had reason to. Ada began going down to the lower gate each evening once her own paddles were shut, turning the windlass slowly so the water would take its time.
Tom came home from Birmingham in the November of the flood, thinner and quieter, with a cough he waved off. He did not talk about the hospital. He stood on the lower gate with his hands buried in his coat and watched the brown water pour under the beams, and Ada walked up the towpath to the upper board, wiped the rain from the lettering with her sleeve, and read it aloud slowly enough that he could hear it over the weir. When she came back down, he had already climbed onto the beam to meet her, and the lock between them was filling.
