Fine line script quote on the collarbone
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a woman's upper chest and shoulder, with only her lips and chin visible. The tattoo is a thin, cursive script reading 'with every heartbeat' that runs along the collarbone towards the shoulder. It is rendered in black ink with solid, even linework and no shading, against pale skin and a white lace top.

Mrs Agnes Pryce had the kitchen table cleared by six, the lamp turned low so the frost on the inside of the window would not show her hand shaking. Dictated letters came up the lane every Tuesday. Tom Hollis wrote to his brother in Canada, though he could not write at all, and Agnes set his words down in her best hand, the careful joined script she used for nothing else.

The snow came in on the Thursday. Tom's news was plain: the ewes were lambing early, the beck had frozen to the stones, the old collie had gone lame in the back leg. Agnes wrote each line as he gave it. At the foot of the page he stopped, and she waited with the pen lifted while he looked into the fire.
"Put this at the bottom," he said, and he said the words slowly so she could catch every one: with every heartbeat. She asked whether he meant the sheep, or the farm, or the brother. He said he didn't know. His mother had said it each morning when she left the house for the dairy, and it was what he wanted his brother to hear.
Agnes wrote it in a looping line that ran out toward the edge of the paper, the ink thinning where the nib went dry. She blotted it and folded the sheet, and when the post van finally crawled through the drifts on Friday she pressed the envelope into the driver's glove. Tom never asked to read it. He was out in the lambing shed before the van had turned at the gate, and she watched his lamp moving across the white field until the snow took it.
