Love fearlessly script on shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a woman's upper shoulder and collarbone area with the words love fearlessly written in flowing black script. The linework is thin and even, with solid ink and no visible shading. The skin is lit softly against a blurred background of red fabric and a beige surface.

The kettle has boiled dry twice since the post came, so forgive the scorch on this page. I have read your letter four times and I am still not sure whether you are telling me you are staying in Lisbon or only that you wish you could.

Mother's tin is on the dresser where it always was, the one with the sticking lid and the faded blue hills. I finally prised it open on Sunday and found a card folded small beneath her button box, copied out in her careful hand from the Sunday school wall: love fearlessly, underlined twice, as if she expected us to argue. I laughed out loud in the empty kitchen, which startled the cat off the windowsill.

I used to think it was a silly sentiment for a woman who never let us leave the table with half a plate. But I have been counting the years since you left, and I have begun to suspect she meant the opposite of what it sounds like. Not reckless. Only willing to stand in the open when the thing you love walks out of the gate.

So I am not asking you to come home. I am sending the card, the spare key to the boat shed, and the tin, which I do not want any more. Write when the ship docks. Bring me a stone from the harbour wall, the kind that never dries out.

Yours in haste, Agnes
