Black script lettering tattoo of a short quote across the upper back near the shoulder blade, on a person wearing a white floral camisole.

Script quote tattoo on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person seen from behind wears a white camisole with a small blue floral print. Two lines of thin, cursive script in dark ink sit on the upper back, close to the shoulder blade. The lettering is crisp and even, and the warm, soft-focus lighting gives the skin a golden tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth Pellow had been painting shopfronts on Harbour Street for thirty-one years, and she could tell a good hand from a shaky one before the board was out of the van. The new owner of the bakery wanted gilt capitals and a cartoon loaf with a grin. Ruth wanted to finish her tea first.

Her apprentice, Dev, sulked the way boys do when they have been told their lettering is good enough and not better. He had copied a line from the back of Ruth's old copybook onto a scrap of primed board, the piece she used for testing brushes. He read it aloud, stumbling on the long words: 'I am who I am today because of the choices I made yesterday.' 'Who wrote that?' he asked. 'My mother, on the flyleaf of a Bible she gave me the week I left school,' Ruth said. 'She had a terrible temper and beautiful handwriting. I got the handwriting.'

Dev asked whether she regretted the years she'd spent on the pier kiosk instead of the shop she'd once talked about opening in Canterbury. Ruth didn't answer straight away. She dipped a fine sable into the size and handed it to him, then pointed at the bakery window, where the glass still carried a ghost of the old chemist's name.

That afternoon Dev lettered a single line in the bottom corner of the window, small enough that it would be missed by anyone in a hurry. Ruth watched him from the kerb, arms folded, while the first customers queued for their rolls and didn't look down once.
