Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small handwritten script phrase is inked in thin black linework along the outer upper arm. The lettering is delicate and even, with a slight slant and minimal shading. The image is in black and grey tones, with soft natural light falling across the arm and the striped sleeve at the top of the frame.

The sign-writer, Idris Pugh, came up the lane on the Tuesday with his brushes wrapped in oilcloth, and he found Nell Tranter at the back of the chapel hall doing what she had done every Tuesday since her mother's funeral: copying out other people's hands. She had a copybook open on the trestle and a pencil she kept sharp with the penknife her father left her.

"Chapel want a text for the new window," Idris said. "Something short. The vicar says the old one's gone soft in the rain." He laid a card on the table. Nell read it twice, then once more. Be still and know. The letters were fine and even, leaning like wheat in a wind, the kind of hand the Ministry would never trust with a ration book.
She wrote it out forty times that afternoon, until the lamp needed lighting and the pencil had worn to a stub. Each time she tried to make the k lean a little less and the d reach a little further from the line. Idris came back at dusk, looked at the sheets fanned across the floor, and picked the fortieth without a word. "That one," he said. "Sounds like somebody who means it."
The window went in at Whitsun. Nobody in the congregation remarked on the hand, only on the words, and on the light that came through them onto the pews in thin black lines. Nell sat in the back pew with her hands folded. When the sun moved on and the letters slid across the floorboards, she found she had nothing left to copy, and she did not mind.
