Fine line script tattoo on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a thigh showing a thin, single-line cursive script tattoo in black ink running diagonally down the skin. The lettering is partly obscured and blurred, so only some letters are readable. The background is a light grey and white top and shorts, with a little skin tone and a gold bracelet visible at the edge, and the image is a soft, natural-light shot.

The dance hall at Carrick Mill had a wall that the dancers wrote on in pencil, and nobody was allowed to rub anything out. Nell Ashby waxed the floorboards every Saturday and claimed the wood remembered every step taken on it. When a fiddler called Tomas came up from the coast with one tune and no name for it, the young people asked him what it was called, and he only said, write what you cannot say and it will dance for you.

Ada Penrose was seventeen and had been promised to a farmer's son she did not like. She wrote her line in slanting cursive along the bottom of the wall, a sentence she would never have spoken to anyone, and then she danced the whole night with a stranger who never once looked at her face. By dawn the stranger was gone and the pencil had worn to a stub.
The next Saturday Nell found Ada's line had crept down the wall and across the boards, running in a thin black thread toward the door as if it wanted to leave. Ada followed it out onto the road and walked behind it for three miles, past the mill race and the chapel gate, until the words stopped at the crossroads where the coast road begins.
Ada went home by the lane that evening and married no one that year. Nell swept the floor on Sunday and found, under the sill, a single word in the same slanting hand that Ada had never written, and beneath it the fiddle's tune, unfinished.
