Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small black script word, "you.", sits on the back of the neck, with a dot after it. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering shown in a single dark ink. The background is a pale wall and the frame is tightly cropped on the neck, with a hand holding back the hair and a pendant necklace on a peach top visible at the edge.

The surveyor wanted the east tower down by spring, but Dad wanted one more look at the window arch before the scaffold went up. I climbed it with a torch in my back pocket and a soft brush between my teeth, and the lichen came away in grey flakes under my thumb until a few letters showed in the dressed stone.

The cuts were shallow, the way an apprentice cuts when he is afraid of being caught. Y, o, u, and then a small dot, as if the sentence had been finished in a hurry or abandoned on purpose. I sat on the sill with my boots over the drop and tried to work out who had been meant. The parish ledgers named three Ellises, a steward who drowned in the moat, and a mason called Wenlock who was paid for a week's work in 1703 and never again. None of them left a line about a girl.

Dad came up at dusk with a flask of tea and found me still there. He looked at the carving for a long time, then took the brush from my hand and went over the dot twice, so it would not weather away before the men arrived with their drills. He said nothing about Wenlock, or about the steward, and I did not ask.

I left the scaffold until morning. Under the word, in soft pencil, I wrote the first name I could think of, and then, because it seemed unkind to leave a sentence unfinished, I added the one word that might have answered it.
