Fine line script tattoo on upper arm beside a gilded dress
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A model is photographed from behind with her hair pinned up and her back bare, wearing a sculptural dress of gold-toned, lattice-like forms that curve around her waist. A thin line of black cursive script sits on her upper arm, with fine, even strokes. The image is mostly warm gold and brown tones against a dark background, and the tattoo is small and secondary to the dress.

You are the only one at Saint Aldric's who can bend gilt wire without it kinking, so the prior sends you to the scriptorium loft in February, when the cold has got into the hinges of the presses. The commission is a reliquary cage for a bone the abbey does not own yet, a finger of a saint promised by a bishop who never visits. Brother Osric has drawn the tracery on vellum: pointed arches folding into arches, spires that stop short of the ceiling so that light can pass through the gaps.

You work by the window with a bowl of warm water and a pot of rabbit-skin glue. Each strip you bend must match the one before it, or the lattice will sag by summer. Brother Anselm brings you bread at nones and asks what the new piece is for. You tell him it is a house for something small that must be seen from every side. He laughs and says that is what they said about the nave.
Near the end of the month you find a scrap tucked inside the box of pins, in a novice's hand, the ink gone brown: Oh, the places you'll go. You read it twice, then press it flat beneath the last spire, where no one will see it except whoever opens the case. You bend the final arch, and it holds.
