Banded wrist tattoos under a gold bracelet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a woman's wrist and forearm shows three or four thin black bands tattooed around the inner wrist, each filled with small repeating chain-link, dot and bead motifs. A silver bracelet with a dangling charm sits just below the tattoos, and a gold woven dress with a netted pattern fills the background. The linework is fine and the marks are solid black with no visible colour, against warm, softly lit skin.

Pull that chair up to the trolley, love, and mind the drip stand. Ward four is quiet tonight, so I'll tell you about Agnes Tully, who mended chain for the Calder Yards before there was a hospital on this hill at all. Her father had the forge, and her hands were never still. Every night after the furnace cooled she threaded small links of brass wire through one another, twisting each one shut with pliers she'd filed down herself, until she had enough to bind her wrists three times over.

The foreman noticed. He told her a girl ought to wear lace, not ironwork, and she told him the ironwork was lace if you looked at it properly. He docked her a shilling for the wire. She kept the last link he cut, a dull little bead no bigger than a pea, and strung it between the bands as a count. One bead for every night the boilers ran cold, she said, and not one more.
The winter the river froze, the fires went out in the yards and the men came up the hill with bad chests and blackened fingers, and Agnes walked the gates with a lamp and a tin of salve. She ran out of links before she ran out of nights. So she unwound the bands from her own wrists and knotted them round a boy's broken fingers to keep the splints straight. He kept those splints for fifty years, I'm told.
So when they ask me why I still wear my watch on the wrong side, I say it's a count. Nobody on this ward believes me, but the bead's still there. Go on, drink your tea, and check bed nine before you sit back down.
