Dear Sorella, the ferry from Procida is late again, so I am writing this on the back of the timetable while I wait on the quay. You will laugh, because the timetable has been wrong since Easter. Papà's boat is still tied up where he left it. Zio Sandro has offered to paint it blue for the summer, and I have told him to wait until you come home, because you always said the green made the harbour look like a bruise.

The house smells of lemons and diesel. I found your swimming cap in the drawer under the good tablecloth, the one with the torn strap, and I put it on the windowsill where the morning light comes through. Mamma asks every day whether you have phoned. Every day I tell her that you are busy with the big job in Leeds, which is true, and that you will come when the figs are ripe, which I do not think either of us believes.

Last night I walked to the point with the torch and sat where we used to count the lights of Ischia. There were only four boats out. I thought about the summer you swore you would never leave, and how neither of us would have chosen the other's life, and how that was the whole point of having a sister: someone to be furious with from a safe distance.

The boat leaves Marina Grande at seven on Saturday. I have bought two tickets. One is for you, and I am keeping it in my pocket with the timetable, so that whichever way you come, the sea will have something to hand back to you. Your sister, Nina.
