Family script lettering on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with the word family written in thin black cursive script along the side of one finger. The linework is fine and even, with the letters slanting to the right and shading kept to a minimum. The background is soft yellow and pink, and the wearer has glittery teal nail polish, which sits outside the tattoo itself.

The sign had to be dry by Sunday, so Ada Pennock sat at the kitchen table with the gold size and the thin sable brush her late husband had used for boat names, trying to remember how the letters went. Nobody on Hollis Terrace had asked for a sign before. For nineteen years the front window had carried nothing but a card reading Vacancies, and the card had always been enough.

Tom Ardern, who had come down from the Midlands in October to work the fish quay, stood in the doorway with his cap in his hands and watched her. He said the dining room looked like a waiting room. She said that was because nobody had ever stayed long enough to fill it. She let the letters lean the way the wind leaned on the terrace, all of them toward the harbour, and kept the strokes fine as hair, because a word meant to be read at a glance should not shout about itself.
On Sunday the lodgers came down to the long table for the joint, and the card sat propped against the teapot where everyone could see it. Nobody mentioned it until Ruth, the girl from the room above the scullery, asked who was going to sign it. Ada had not thought of that. She handed her the brush, and Ruth wrote her name small beneath the word, then passed it to Tom, who wrote his in capitals because he could not manage the slant. The others followed until the card was crowded with names in every kind of hand.
By the time the gravy had gone cold the bottom edge had run out of room. Ada took the card back, looked at the crowded lines, and found she had no wish to ask anyone to leave.
