Fine line spiral and figure on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A fine black line tattoo sits centrally on the upper back, close to the neck. The design combines a curling spiral at the top with an upright stroke that has a horizontal crossbar and a curved branch near its base. The linework is thin and even, and the photograph is black and white, with the skin tone and soft background kept neutral.

The flood has come early this year, and the men at the nilometer will not stop asking you what the water means. You keep the staff on the bottom step, where the stone is worn smooth by two hundred years of measurers' feet. Its red marks climb the wall one cubit at a time, each named for a king who never once saw the river rise.

Your master gave you the rope when your hands were too small to hold the knot. It is coiled around a bronze pin, a spiral of cord that unwinds down the shaft into the brown water, with a weight at its end shaped like a heron's foot. Each dawn you lower it, count the wet, and call the number up the stairs. Tonight you lower it and it does not stop. The cord runs out through your fingers, past the last knot, past the crossbar of rope your master tied to mark the old flood, and still the weight swings free.
Above you the stairs fill with lamps. Someone is shouting that the granaries will drown, someone else that the gods are angry. You stand in the stink of silt and understand that the river is not rising at all. The ground beneath the gauge is sinking, slowly, the way the old wall has been sinking since your grandmother's time, and the cord has been measuring the earth, not the water.
You pull the rope up hand over hand and coil it again, tight, the way you were taught. Then you climb to the top step, raise your voice above the lamps, and give the only number that is true: the level is steady, and the ground is going. Let them argue with the stone.
