Small circle and swirl tattoo on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black tattoo on the inside of a pale forearm near the wrist. The design is a small open circle above a looping, curled stroke that resembles a stylised script glyph. The linework is thin and even in solid black ink, set against soft, out-of-focus background with blonde hair at the right edge.

Mrs Dacre kept the bell rope coiled on a brass hook in the vestry of St Ethel's, and for a month she would not let me touch it. 'Watch the sally,' she said, tapping the red woollen grip with one knuckle. 'The bell does not care how clever you are. It only cares whether you let go too soon.'

I practised in the empty tower while the fen mist sat in the lanes below. Every morning I counted the swings aloud until the rope ran smooth through my palms, the wheel above me rising and falling like a slow eye opening. Each time the bell came over the top of its arc, the rope would drop in a neat loop on the boards beside my boots, and Mrs Dacre would sigh and say it was the mark of a ringer who had stopped listening.
On the last Sunday before she went into the hospital at Ely, she climbed the stairs herself, one hand on the wall, and took the rope from me. She rang a single stroke, and the bell spoke out over the frozen reeds and the alders beyond the churchyard. Then she let the rope curl down by her feet and pressed her thumb into the ring of it. 'There,' she said. 'That's the part they never teach you. You have to let it come back to you.'
I still ring on Sundays. The loop forms on the boards every time, and I leave it lying there until the service ends, because she told me it was the bell's way of showing where it had been.
