Fine line spiral symbol on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single black fine line tattoo shows a vertical line topped with a small dot, with stacked looping spiral motifs descending from it. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The tattoo sits on the outer ankle and lower leg, with a fabric sleeve visible at the top edge and a plastic sheet in the background.

Dear Marta, the rain has been coming sideways over Pell Street since Thursday, and Mr Okonkwo has moved the cloth stall under the arch so the bolts stay dry. I'm writing under the thread stall's awning with the paper pressed against a tin of buttons. You'll laugh, but I keep drawing that little sign you liked, the one with the dot on top and loops coming down like a stair someone has tied in knots. The old man two stalls along sells string by the metre and says it's a map for people who keep walking back to the same door.

Yesterday a girl came by with a cracked phone and asked me to write it out for her on a scrap. She kept her thumb on the dot the whole time, as if it might roll off. She said her grandmother had one stitched on a tea towel. I told her the loops are the bits you go round when you won't go straight, and she laughed and said it was the most accurate thing anyone had told her all month.

I thought of you when she said that. You always went round. You went round Father, round the bank, round the sea at Dunmore, and then you went round us entirely and ended up in Lisbon with a suitcase and a postcard of a tram. I don't blame you. I only want you to know the line keeps going. The dot is where you began, and the loops are only the places where you turned to look back.

The rain is easing now. I'm folding the last of the cloth and tucking the paper into my coat so the ink doesn't run. Write back and tell me which loop you're on.
