Heart and anchor fine line on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline of an anchor with a small open heart forming the crown, a ball terminal at the top and a curved arrow-shaped fluke at the base. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the skin looks freshly tattooed and glossy with ointment. The design sits centred on the image against a pale blue-grey background.

Dear Marguerite, the ferry was cancelled again, so I walked the length of the Mersey Tunnel road in the rain and ended up at the Pier Head at two in the morning, which you would have scolded me for. The clock on the Liver Building said twenty to, and the river was black and busy with light. I sat on the bollard where Dad used to make us count the tugs. Nobody counts tugs at night, it turns out. They just go.

I am writing this on the back of the receipt from the chip shop because I forgot my notebook at the Lime Street station cafe, which is my own fault. The man who gave me the chips said his brother had an anchor done in Anfield Road, a little one, outline only, with a heart hooked into the top of it like a crown. He said the artist had told him the trick was to keep the line thin enough that it looked like it might drift off the skin. I thought that was a daft thing to say about a tattoo until I looked at the Mersey and understood him.
So here is my confession. I have been carrying the envelope with the cheque for the flat deposit since Tuesday, and I have not posted it, because if I post it there is no pretending I am coming back to Liverpool for the summer. The heart is the bit I keep getting stuck on. It is open at the top, like it is still deciding whether to hold on or let go of the rope.
I am posting this letter from the box by the Cunard building in the morning. The cheque is folded inside it. I will let you decide what that means, the way you always do, and I will catch the 7:15 whichever answer you send.
