Fine line black tattoo of an infinity symbol with a small angel figure, showing a halo and wing, on the inside of an ankle.

Angel and infinity symbol on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows an infinity symbol with a small angel formed at its upper loop, including a halo above the head and a single folded wing. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The design sits centred on the ankle and fills a small area of the photograph against a plain background.

The lorry has been out of diesel since Preston, so you push the last of the big top's canvas onto the field by hand while the others argue about whether the Mackintosh boys will still pay for the tent. You are the one who keeps the old sign straight. It shows a woman in a silver halo rising over a figure-eight ring, one wing folded tight against her back because the painter ran out of room and never went back to finish it.

Nobody else knows the sign was supposed to have two wings. Your grandmother told you that, the year she stopped riding the high wire and started sewing costumes for other people. She said the infinity loop was the act itself: you go round and round the ring and the crowd never sees the start or the end of it, only the middle where you lean out into the air. The angel was the catcher, the one who never let go of your wrist.

On the last night in Carlisle the wire sagged, and you climbed up anyway, holding a single line of thin rope and no net. Below, the light made the sawdust look like sea. Halfway across you stopped, the way you were taught, and waited for someone to call your name from the ground. Someone did. It was only the lad who sweeps, pointing at the sky, saying the wind had turned.

You came down. In the morning you took the paint from the van and, with a fine brush, added the second wing, the one you had always been missing. It did not look like much from the road. It was enough.
