Fine line tattoos: geometric, hands and moon phases

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

This collage shows three photographs of black fine line tattoos. The top image shows a geometric symbol with a diamond, arrows and small dots on skin, the lower left shows two outlined hands cupping a ringed planet, crescent moon, stars and dots, and the lower right shows a column of stars, crescent and full moon phases, a sun and a cross-like motif on the back of the neck. All designs use thin single-weight linework with minimal shading on light skin.

The big top had been patched so many times that the canvas looked like a map of rain, and still the ringmaster insisted the show would go on through the autumn. Nobody argued with him any more. The lions had gone to a sanctuary in Wales, the strongman had taken a job loading lorries at Doncaster, and only Mother Oria was left to read palms for the few farmers who still came to the field gate.

Her hands were the thing people talked about. Long-fingered and always cold, they could hold a child's wrist and tell it which way the river ran. When the last of the money went missing from the cashbox, the ringmaster blamed the wind, and Oria said nothing. That night she walked out to the edge of the field, lifted both hands and cupped the sky the way a person cups water from a stream. Stars fell into her palms and rolled down her wrists like dew. A crescent moon settled between her thumbs, and a ringed planet turned slowly above it, humming.

In the morning the cashbox was full. Nobody could say where the coins came from, only that they were warm and smelled of hay and of the far side of the sea. The ringmaster counted them twice and wept into his moustache. Oria packed her shawl and her cards and went on to the next village, and where she had walked, the grass stayed silver until noon.
