Fine line winged figure on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle style black outline shows a winged figure with a small head and a flower-like shape beneath it, with a small curled line to the upper right. The linework is thin and unshaded, with no fill or colour. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper back, photographed from behind with the subject's blonde hair and a black bra strap visible around it.

Every night after the last lamp on the Helter Skelter went dark, the marigolds on the flower wagon lost another row, and the showman swore it was the fair's own ghost. Mabel Quill knew better. She had seen the thief once, lifting blooms from the bed beside the swing boats: a creature no taller than a teaspoon, with a head like a thimble, wings thin as cellophane, and a single curl of hair bobbed up behind it like a question mark.

Mabel did not tell her uncle. She set a saucer of cold tea beside the wagon wheel instead, and in the morning the saucer was empty and a note lay under it on a scrap of ticket paper, written in pencil so faint she had to hold it up to the sun. Your marigolds are for sale, it said, but I have no coin. I can pay in the thing you lost on this fair.
Mabel had dropped her grandmother's brass compass through a gap in the big wheel the week before, and had not dared mention it to anyone. She wrote back on the same paper: What do you want for it? The reply came with the next dawn, folded small. A ride on the carousel, the horse with the broken ear, after closing, when the music is only in my head.
That night Mabel wound the carousel by hand, the gears clicking in the dark, and the tiny rider climbed onto the chipped horse and folded its wings against its back. The compass sat in the wooden saddle as they went round. In the morning the marigolds stood back in the wagon, every bloom of them, and a fresh curl of hair lay in the seat of the horse with the broken ear.
