Fairy outline on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A single-weight black outline of a fairy with wings and a small head, drawn with simple continuous lines and no shading. The ink is black only, set on pale skin beside a dark bra strap. The tattoo sits near the shoulder blade and fills the centre of a close photograph.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit still now, and mind the drip stand, it has a temper like a goat. You want the story about the fairy who lived in the linen cupboard on Ward Seven? Well. It was a wet February, the year the boiler packed in, and night sister Maureen Tully went in for a clean sheet and found a woman no taller than a teaspoon perched on the folded pillowcases, drawing with her finger in the shelf dust.

Her wings were so thin you could read the shelf labels through them, and her head was only a small knot of a thing, bowed over her work. She was mending the ward. Every night she traced the broken bits of the place back together with one unbroken stroke, never lifting her pen, because a lifted line, she said, lets the bad air in. Maureen watched her go round the sluice room, the corner of bay three, the cracked tile by the lift, and never once take the nib from the paper.

Then came the night the power dropped and the monitors shrieked, and the fairy didn't draw a thing. She sat on Maureen's shoulder, small and still, and waited until the generator caught. Afterwards Maureen asked why she hadn't mended the trouble. The fairy said some lines are only meant to be seen, not finished, and flew off into the dark of the stairwell.

Right, pass me that cup. Somebody on bay three is awake and wants his tea.
