The sluice gate at Haddon Drain had been stuck since the spring flood, so Margaret Aske went down the bank in her wellingtons with a flask of tea and a tin of seed she had no business carrying. Nobody had told her the lotus was dead. Her father had said it the way he said most things, as if it were weather.

The pond had been a mere before the men with the steam pumps came, and it still held the old ground under its black water. Three summers ago she had pushed a handful of seed into the silt at the margin, the ones her grandmother had kept in a sherry bottle, hard as pebbles and sealed with wax. She had expected nothing. She had kept the tin in the pantry anyway, because her grandmother said a seed only forgets how to grow if you stop asking it.

This morning there were three leaves standing above the water, folded tight as the tips of a fountain pen, and beneath them, where the reeds broke the surface, three small green pods. Margaret knelt on the cold planks and did not reach for them. She counted them twice, the way you count children at a school gate, then sat back on her heels and laughed until the heron on the far bank lifted off in disgust.

She poured the tea into the flask lid and set it on the plank beside her. Below the water the mud had begun to warm. Tomorrow she would ring the drainage board and tell them the gate could wait.
