Fine line word "free" on the hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a denim shirt rests her hand on her shoulder, showing a small tattoo of the word "free" in thin, black, cursive script across the back of the hand. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is dark against the skin. The tight crop centres the tattoo, with turquoise rings and beaded bracelets in the frame and the face out of shot.

Dear Nell, the van is still in the yard behind the chapel, and I haven't had the heart to sell it. Your mum rang on Sunday to say the Co-op on Mill Street has gone over to vinyl stickers printed in an office somewhere, so nobody will ever again see a man on a ladder with a mahl stick braced against his wrist and gold leaf on his breath. I told her good riddance to the stickers and then sat with the kettle going cold, because I knew she was right about the rest of it.

The last thing I lettered was one word on the glass of the old chandler's at the harbour end. The owner wanted FREE in gold, shadowed in black, and when I quoted him for the shadow he said he'd manage without. I told him the word needed room to breathe. So I kept the strokes thin, let the f drop a loop like a line paid out over the water, and ran the tail of the final letter off the edge of the pane as if it had somewhere better to be. It took me the whole of a Thursday, and my knees have not forgiven me.

He stood on the quay a long while after I'd finished, squinting at it against the light. Then he asked if I'd do the same on his wife's car. I said I'd done my last one, which was true, though I didn't tell him the word had been the only honest thing I'd ever painted for money.

Keep the sable brushes, love. Put them in your bag and take the tin with them. And next time you come to see me, show me that little word you had put on your hand. I'd like to see whether you kept the tail on the end of it.
