Fine script word free on the hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black script word, free, is inked across the back of a hand that rests on a bare shoulder. The linework is thin and even, with a slight slant and a tapered stroke, and the lettering is sharp and readable. The image is warm toned and shows a denim shirt, turquoise rings and layered beaded bracelets around the wrist.

You climb the seventy-one iron steps with the paraffin lamp swinging from your wrist, because the electric has failed again and the relief boat is three hours late. The glass room is cold. Someone has polished the brass anyway, and the lens throws its slow white arm across a sea the colour of pewter.

The logbook lies open on the desk. Your grandfather has written the weather in his square capitals: wind south-west, visibility poor, sea moderate. Beneath it, in the slanted hand he keeps for letters to your grandmother, is a single word, underlined twice. Free. You read it, then read it again, and the lamp in your fist begins to hiss.
Forty-one years he has kept this light. He calls the rock a jailer that feeds you well. Tomorrow the new keeper steps off the boat with his suitcase and his opinions, and tonight the winding is yours. You take the brass key from its hook and wind the clockwork until the weights rise to the ceiling beams.
You release the brake. The great lens begins to turn, carrying its beam out over the water as it has every night since before your father was born. You leave the log open at that word. Then you go down the steps without the lamp, because for once you do not need to see the way.
