Every spring the wind came off the headland and tore a shutter loose at the boarding house on Gull Row. He walked the cliff path each morning and came back at dusk with his sleeves torn by gorse. One evening he stood at the top of the headland, drew, and loosed an arrow out over the bay. He said the wind would carry it to whoever needed it. Mrs Parr's son Tom, eleven and sulky, ran down the shingle with a lantern to see where it fell. The lantern showed only grey water and the tide coming in. The arrow was never found, and the lodger left on the next train without settling his bill.

Tom grew up and went out on the lifeboat. Forty winters later a shaft came in on the tide and caught against the bottom step of the slipway. The wood was bleached to the colour of bone, but the head was still sharp and the feathers were still bound with green thread, the same thread Mrs Parr had used to sew her ledger.

Tom carried it up the hill to the top room of the old house. He laid it along the sill where the lodger had slept and closed the window against the wind. That night the shutter stayed still, and in the morning the ledger had a new line written in his careful hand.
