Fine script lettering on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine, flowing script word is tattooed diagonally along a forearm, running from the wrist towards the elbow. The linework is thin and even, with small loops and tapering strokes. The photograph is black and white with a shallow depth of field, so the arm is sharp while the background and the person's head are blurred.

Mum's handwriting was never neat, but on the back of the gas bill she made every letter lean as if it was late for something. I found the bill in the drawer under the microwave on Tuesday, when the lift in Ardley House had been broken for three days and I was carrying the shopping up eleven flights one bag at a time.

I rang Ruth from the stairwell, where the signal is better and the smell of bleach is worse. She said Mum had written it the winter Dad went into hospital, before the chemo, when the two of them still sat at the kitchen table after tea doing the crossword in biro. Ruth thought it was the name of a bus stop. I thought it was a street in the town where they met, the one she had never once let us visit.
On Thursday the lift came back. I stood in it with the bill folded in my pocket and pressed fourteen, then pressed it again for no reason, because the number lit up and that felt like the right thing to do when something has been mended. The doors opened onto the balcony where Mum used to shake out the tablecloths. I took the bill out and read the word aloud to the pigeons, badly, the way she would have corrected me.
Then I did the thing she always did with a word she liked. I wrote it on the steamed-up glass of the balcony door with one finger, leaning each letter over as she had, and watched the condensation slowly take it back.
