Matching script lettering on two forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side, each carrying a line of cursive script lettering that continues across both arms. The linework is fine and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The black and white photograph is taken close up against a dark background, with one hand holding a mug at the top and two hands clasping at the bottom.

Dear Nell,

The Maud lay three days off Cape Finisterre when the cook's boy dropped the kettle, and I thought of your kitchen and the chipped white mug you insisted on filling to the brim. Tea goes cold quick at sea. Nothing stays hot except the argument we had on the quay, which I still think I won.

Ironwork and ink come up from the wardroom every Sunday, and Mr Pryce lets me sit under the lamp so I can copy out what I owe you. I have the word on my mind, the one we split between us on the bench at Holyhead: you took the first half, I took the second, and neither of us would say which half was the true one. The shipwright's daughter drew the letters for us on brown paper, joined up like a river. I think she meant it as a joke, and I have never been able to tell you whether it was.

When we come back, bring the cup. I will hold my end of the sentence across the table, and we will see whether the two halves still meet when the lamplight falls on them. If they don't, I will buy another pot of ink and try again on the back of my hand, the way Mr Pryce says sailors do when the sea has taken everything else.

Yours through the weather, Tom
