Fine script line tattoo on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a person in a grey crop top, grey drawstring shorts and a dark robe. A small black script tattoo of a short line of lettering sits on the outer upper thigh, with thin, even strokes. The palette is black on warm skin, and the tattoo is framed in the lower centre of the image.

Right, sit down, the lot of you. The urn's still warm and nobody leaves until I've finished, because I've been waiting forty years to tell this in front of the people who were there. You remember Miss Pardoe's chalk, the stub she kept behind her ear like a cigarette? The week before the summer holidays she wrote one short line across the blackboard and never once said what it meant. Read it out, she said, and we did, thirty of us mumbling like a choir that had lost its hymn book.

The line was short. Some of you still say it wrong. A short line sits in the head like a pebble in a shoe, and you walk round it for decades without ever taking the boot off. Half of you copied it into your rough books that afternoon. Gareth Pugh wrote it on his shin in biro, which his mother had something to say about.
What we didn't know was that Miss Pardoe had taken it from the back of her father's coal ledger, a page where he'd scribbled it beside the name of a field behind the gasworks. He'd sold that field to the council the spring before he died, and the line was the only thing he kept from it. She'd come to teach at our school to be near the place, and she never told a soul that the hockey ball we'd lost in those reeds in 1983 was still lying there, half sunk, with her initials scratched on it.
So here's my ask. Tomorrow, go and look. Bring a torch and a bad pair of boots, and mind the ditch. I'll take the first look myself, because I'm the one who promised her I'd dig it out, and I'm far too old to be trusted with a spade.
