Close crop of a torso showing a fine line black rose and vine tattoo running along the ribs below the bust, with a small script tattoo partly visible on the lower abdomen.

Rose vine tattoo along the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A torso shot from below the bust down to the waistband of denim jeans, with a white crop top pulled up. A small black rose with thin leaves and stems curves along the ribs beneath the bust, and a partly visible script tattoo sits low on the abdomen. The linework is fine and mostly solid black with light grey shading, set against smooth skin and a soft, blurred indoor background.

Dear Nell,

The rose on the signal box wall came into bloom the week after you left, which I have decided to take as a personal insult. Mr Pryce says it is only the weather. He says a great many things since the timetable changed and the 7.40 stopped calling at Hollins Cross altogether.

I went up to the box this morning to fetch the logbook and found the vine had got under the sill again, its thin stems pushing through the gap where the putty has gone. Fine green tendrils, a few leaves no bigger than a thumbnail, and one bud beside the lever frame, dark and tight as a fist. You used to say it looked like it was trying to read the signals. I'd tell you to stop being daft, and you'd say the rose had better manners than the 4.15, and I'd agree with you.

I've kept the Bradshaw you left in the drawer. Somebody has to check the old connections, and inside the back cover I found a pencilled note in your hand: Ask Gwen about the tea urn. I still haven't, but I will. On Tuesday the train came in four minutes early, and I stood on the platform in the drizzle with the flag under my arm and nobody to tell.

Come back at the weekend if you can. The rose is nearly open, and I don't think it will wait much longer than we did.

Love, Maud
