Mandala and floral forearm tattoo
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman wears a black sweatshirt with a large white Adidas logo and rests her left hand on her hip, showing a tattoo on the inner forearm. The tattoo has a circular mandala-style flower with fine dotted and stippled shading, plus swirling linework and a small tree-like motif near the elbow. It is rendered in black and grey ink against natural skin, with the arm and hand filling the centre of the frame.

Sit closer, you lot, the fire's only good for the front rows. I'll tell you about the Palais at Morrow Bay, the summer the band sent for a fiddler from across the water and got instead Ada Pell, who could not read a note but could hear a tune turn over in the dark like a fish. She came in a borrowed coat with a tin of pencils and a little ash tree she had drawn on her wrist to remind her where she came from, its branches curled up like a question.

The floor that year was laid over sand, so every foot that danced sent a fine grit up into the lamps. Ada watched it hang in the light and went home each night to draw the patterns it made: rings inside rings, petals that opened from a single dot, the way the dust fell back into a ring around whatever had stirred it. The landlord's wife said she was mad. The fiddler's brother said she was clever, and that was worse.
On the last night of August the sea came up under the back doors and the lamps went out one by one. In the black, somebody began to hum the old reel, and Ada, who had nothing to see by, played the whole dance from memory, every turn the grit had ever made. By morning the floor was a circle of wet footprints around a single dry patch where she had stood, and nobody in Morrow Bay ever danced on it again.
