Firefighter badge and flag on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a firefighter Maltese cross badge with a central axe and ladder emblem, set over a partly shaded American flag with stars and stripes. The badge is rendered with raised, dimensional shading and highlights, while the flag uses bold black and soft grey tones that fade across the arm. The image is a close view of an upper arm with a white tank top, and the design fills the frame with the badge at the top and the flag wrapping down toward the elbow.

Sit closer, the rain's coming in under the awning and the stall-keeper won't mind if we crowd his crates. You want the one about Dolan's Ladder, the one they never put in the paper. Forty years back the Halloran Street depot had a brass cross on every truck door, four arms and a little axe laid crossways through the middle, and a hook-and-ladder that the men called Old Mercy because it never once came back with a man it went out for. Dolan drove it. He had a voice like a gravel cart and hands so scarred the glove wouldn't stay on them.

On a night like this, rain coming sideways off the river, a tenement caught on Pell Street with a woman at a fourth-floor window and a boy who wouldn't leave his grandfather's pigeons. The stairs were gone. Dolan put the ladder up himself, sixty feet of it swaying like a mast, and the boy came down clutching a cage against his chest while the woman handed him out one arm at a time. Dolan went up last. Nobody living saw what happened in that room, only the flag hanging off the cornice, stars gone grey with smoke, stripes running down the brick like something poured.
They found Dolan at dawn sitting on the kerb with his helmet in his lap and the boy asleep against his shoulder. The pigeons had survived. So had the woman, the boy, and the badge, which still had its axe and its ladder when they pried it off the truck door and carried it back to the depot in the rain. Hang that on your wall, they say, and the weather stays out. It's a true story, mostly. Drink your tea before it goes cold.
