Blue morpho butterfly on the back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A blue morpho butterfly is shown in the centre of the lower back, with its wings viewed from above and shaded to appear raised off the skin. The wings use blue gradients, fine vein detail and a row of small white dots along the outer edge, with a dark shadow beneath. A black garment strap and waistband sit at the bottom of the frame, and a grey shaded flower tattoo appears at the upper right edge.

The rain had been falling on the market at Cresswell Bridge for nine days, and the stallholders had stopped pretending it would stop. Old Ruth Abernethy kept her cloth stall under the iron awning by the fish hall, and every morning she unpinned a blue silk scarf from the post and set it out to dry on the rail, because her mother had told her that a thing left wet too long goes sour.

On the tenth morning a boy came running through the puddles with a wooden box under his arm. He said his sister had caught a butterfly in the pump house, a blue one as big as a hand, and it had stopped beating its wings. He wanted to know if Ruth would sell him a pin for it, so it could be shown in the glass case at the fair. Ruth told him she had no pins, only needles, and that a butterfly that has stopped is not a thing to be pinned.
She went with him anyway, carrying the scarf. In the pump house the butterfly lay on the wet flagstones, its wings open like two blue sails. Ruth knelt, laid the silk over it, and waited. The rain drummed on the tin roof. After a long while the wings lifted, very slowly, the way a sleeper turns over.
The boy's sister said it was the best thing she had ever seen. Ruth folded the scarf, still damp, and went back to her stall. The butterfly stayed on the rail beside her until the market closed, and when the lamps came on it was still there, opening and closing its wings in the warm air above the steam.
