Five outline stars along the side
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a row of five outlined stars in black ink on the side of the torso, graduating in size from left to right and sitting beside the navel. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill inside the stars. The subject wears a red bikini and sits in a chair, with the warm red of the swimwear and the grey tones of the tattoo as the main colours.

He took a carpenter's pencil from his top pocket and drew on the inside of the shed door, five stars in a row. The smallest sat at the left, the biggest at the right, each one a little wider than the last. He drew only the edges. "Don't fill them in," he said, when she reached for the paint tin. "The sky never does. It leaves the middle empty so you can see what's coming through."
She thought about that for a long time, long after the lawn had gone dark and he had gone in. Then the winter came and the shed was shut up, and then he was gone too.
Last spring she opened the shed to find the door repainted a dull green. Under the gloss, though, the five pencil stars still showed, faint as breath on glass. She stood there with a brush in one hand and the tin in the other. She did not fill them in. Instead she carried the bean canes out and pushed them into the ground in a line beneath the stars, each cane a finger's width taller than the one before, and tied the first green shoots to them one by one.
