Three star tattoos on the side of the torso

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A cropped photograph of a tanned torso lying down, with the face out of frame. Three small star tattoos in dark grey ink sit on the side of the abdomen, decreasing in size from top to bottom. The stars have outlined shapes with light shading, and the warm sunlit skin and white crochet bikini fill most of the frame.

Nobody rides the 0040 out of Piccadilly on a Tuesday unless they have somewhere to be or nowhere at all, and Mrs Okonedo, who had nowhere, always sat at the back with a paper bag of chips going cold on her knee. I drove that route for eleven years. I knew the sound she made when the bus took the Hyde Park corner too fast.

The third week of November she got on carrying a biscuit tin and asked me to stop at the old observatory gate on Blackheath, which was shut, and I said so. She said she wasn't going in. She only wanted to see the sky without the orange sodium lamps, and she wanted me to look too. We stood in the road with the engine ticking. Three stars sat low over the rooftops, one big, one smaller, one smaller still, like someone had marked a route with a pencil and then lost interest.

She opened the tin. Inside were letters, a stack of them, all addressed to a man called Felix at an address in Deptford that had been a laundrette since 1994. "He taught me those," she said, pointing up. "Said if you lose your bearings, find the biggest and walk toward the smallest."

I drove her home at half past one. At her door she handed me a letter with my name on it, in pencil, dated that morning. Inside was a single line: the third star is the one that's still moving.
