Ruler tattoo on the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A cropped photograph of a torso in a black textured swimsuit, with a small ruler tattoo on the side just below the ribs. The ruler is drawn in thin black linework with tick marks and fractional measurements such as 1/3, 1/4 and 1/8. The image is in warm natural light against a green plant and a striped towel, and the tattoo is the only design visible.

Old Tobias Quill kept his rule in his waistcoat pocket, a boxwood folding one with brass hinges, and he would not lend it to anyone in the town of Harrowgate Fell. The trouble began when the miller's daughter ordered a table for her wedding and asked for it to be exactly the width of her mother's kitchen door. Tobias measured the door three times. Each time the fractions crept sideways, a third of an inch here, an eighth there, like a cat walking the edge of a shelf. He sat up all night with a candle and the rule laid flat on the bench, and at first light he understood that the door had been measured by someone who wanted it wider than it was.

He cut the table to the eighth he trusted and no other. When the miller's daughter came back to say it sat a little narrow for her husband's shoulders, Tobias only nodded and folded his rule shut with a click. That evening he took a fine nib and inked a single tick on the inside of his wrist, a fraction small enough to hide under a cuff, so that whenever he doubted himself he would know which measure was his to keep.
