Flaming skull with Harley-Davidson logo on calf

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A skull sits at the centre of the design, with a Harley-Davidson Motor Cycles shield across its upper half and a pair of pistons on either side. Flames in orange, red and yellow wrap around the skull and rise above the shield. The skull is shaded in grey and black for depth, while the flames carry the bright colour, and the design is framed closely on the leg.

The band had stopped twice already, and Maureen could hear the trouble coming up the lane before she saw it: a single engine cut hard, then the rattle of something knocking out of time like a spoon on a tin. Dolly Vane was behind the bar wiping the same glass for the third time. "That's Cass Harrow's machine," she said. "Tell me he's not come back for the dance."

Outside the Palais the rider killed the engine under the lamp and sat a while with his hands on the bars. The tank was painted the colour of a struck match. Flames ran up the forks and licked round the pipes, as if the frame had been dipped in a furnace and pulled out before it could cool. He had carried his father's badge in his jacket for eleven years, a black and orange shield with the company's name across it, and he took it out now and turned it over under his thumb.

Inside, the floor cleared without anyone asking it to. Maureen met him halfway across the boards. He smelled of petrol and rain. "You owe me a waltz," she said. "And an explanation."

He held out the badge. "Dad's shop shut Friday. The landlord sold the lot to a scrap man in Wolverhampton, but the old pistons were still on the bench. I thought you might want one for the mantelpiece."

She laughed, and the band struck up again, and somewhere under the trumpets the engine kept time.
